anti-gay and anti-semitic beliefs was scheduled to protest outside a high school tonight. the church group never showed up but plenty of others did which became an unexpected melting pot. all of this over a high school play about a gay teen whose killing sparked a national debate. we're joined by elise kearschner who picks up the story from gunderson high school in san jose. >> reporter: certainly compelling. none of the protesters from that controversial church showed up. needless to say, on the last night of the play here, it sold out. >> everyone started, like, putting it on facebook. and it just became a really big deal. ♪ because you're amazing >> reporter: long before the curtains opened, the mooumt to protest opponents grew. when you decided to bring the play here, did you think it

would bring all this? >> i thought it might bring a little controversy, but i'm absolutely floored by the amount of support and love poured out from our community. >> reporter: nearly 1,000 people showed support outside. while inside, gunderson high school in san jose, "the laramie project," based on the true story about the 1998 killing of matthew shepherd. >> i've heard him speak. he says vulgar things. and it's just -- i don't think it's appropriate. i don't think -- it's legal, but i don't think it's right. >> reporter: but threats from the topeka church proved empty. >> i think they're cowards. >> reporter: even being no-shows. the justices decided the first amendment does protect the church's right to protest at military tufunerals.

>> yeah, baby! >> reporter: but a group that defends military families at funerals says the odd mix of people who came together in response to the church speaks volumes. >> they're publicity hounds. so whether they're here or not, the focus is on them. but i think the focus should be on the solidarity that's obvious in this group. >> very emotionally moving to have so many people coming out here to spread the love and show how it's not about the hate and proving the church wrong. >> reporter: and the church was also a no-show earlier this month at a high school in chicago. they threatened there. meanwhile, we did contact the church tonight. they did not return our calls. live, elleast kearschner, bay area news. we're tracking another storm .eaded to the bay area. and yes, i hate to tell you, it's going to impact your weekend plans. chief meteorologist jeff ranieri

tonight we're learning that pg and e crews, they actually replaced a section of it 17 years ago, stopping one block short of where it exploded. records just released by the national transportation safety board show the utility replaced five minutes ent. now investigators are trying to figure out why all the pipes in that area wren replaced. tonight hundreds of protesters hit the streets of oakland ironically hoping to stop a ruling aimed at stopping gangs. east bay high school students led a winding march through the fruitvale district ending at a rally. they're protesting a proposed gangen insprukz.

could be happening next door. we'll show you one woman's harrowing story of being held against her will right in plain sight. it's being called one of the worst cases of hoarding in california history. some of the caps are up for adoption. the humane society took in one pieced 250 cats several months ago. the cats were discovered inside a george unit in december. some were in crates. others were dozens of dead cats. the owners are facing charges of animal cruelty and neglect. here we go again tonight on dateline charily sheen allowed cameras back in his home to capture some of his most favorite it's -- >> some of the reasons may rise you.
